About the BDR Series
Durban based Backdraft Racing founded by motorsport legend Tony Martin will be the driving force behind a brand new seven event Backdraft Racing Series supporting many of South Africa’s much loved circuits.
"Backdraft Racing want to usher in a new era in motorsport in South Africa where we reduce participation barriers” commented Martin.

About the Backdraft Racing Series
Backdraft has proudly been part of the South African motorsport scene for over 20 years, competing in a variety of national endurance and racing events. Over time, the cost of participation has risen significantly, making it increasingly difficult for smaller teams and budget-conscious racers to take part.

Recognising this, the Backdraft Race Team, despite enjoying great success in recent years, set out to create a new kind of racing environment: one that’s more affordable, accessible, and inclusive.

The Backdraft Racing Series is designed to open the door to a wider community of racers, from newcomers eager to experience endurance racing for the first time, to seasoned drivers looking to return to the track.

Our goal is simple: to bring together drivers and teams from all backgrounds, ages, and genders, united by their shared passion for motorsport.
Making Motorsport More Accessible
“A significant barrier to circuit racing is cost,” explains Team Manager Brian Martin. “We want to create opportunities for drivers looking to transition from karting into circuit endurance racing, with a product that’s proven, reliable, safe, and affordable.”

The new Backdraft Racing Series is designed to provide invaluable seat time and experience behind the wheel. The series will include both Sprint races and longer 4-, 6-, and 9-hour endurance formats, giving drivers the flexibility to grow their skills and confidence.
A key part of the Backdraft vision is the ‘shared drive’ concept, where two drivers can share a Cobra race car, splitting participation costs while maximising track time.

“We’ve carefully considered the race formats and firmly believe the Backdraft Series offers the best value for money in South African circuit racing,” adds Martin.

Supported by Motorsport South Africa
Motorsport South Africa (MSA) has expressed full support for the new initiative from Backdraft Racing. Speaking on behalf of MSA, Alison Vogelsang, Sporting Co-ordinator for Circuits and Karting, commented:

“MSA is supportive of all new initiatives that encourage participation across all areas of motorsport. We commend the efforts of Backdraft Racing and wish their Series every success.”
